Handholding- Bringing in the flow of the client

Bringing in the flow to the client * Client – A person who wants to change. So he/she will answer your questions.                  Family members are not clients. * C’s counseling- Anxiety- Verify the symptoms         Looking at the data Govt employee- fear, stress, nervousness for 10 years – no specific first incident- C identified as anxiety Gave self affirmative statements, relaxation technique P – wonderfully done. Nice r/l with client. Can I ask a small question? What do you mean by anxiety? ( C needs to have a clear idea) # Take the pressure off completely and reach a completion.   When is the right time to ask question? Threshold point - Client talking about something and changing to another topic. -           This gap to be...

Brush up of therapy/counseling skills

1. Who is a client?          Client is one who voices out that he/she needs help and ready to work for his/her change. Understanding who is the client exactly:                Sometimes the client will not have any prob but come to the therapist for just being with them. Therapist needs to inquire the purpose and only if the client has  issue to process/ work for some change in them, then fix up appointment agreed by both. Only then a person becomes a client.  If the client is not aware why he or she has come to you. Exploration of that can be a session. Therapy is because not the therapist wants it but the client needs it. Client & their issue is to be given the importance and not the therapist's curiosity about the client's life. 2. How do we start off counseling/therapy?          * Therapy/counseling has to happen with the "here and now" happenings.         ...

Gold coins I collected in connect classes

Posted by Jeya Balaji I flipped through the notes I have taken during past one year connect classes.  There are many topics covered.  Thanks to Prasad for teaching tough and in depth topics in a simple manner. I checked the sections which I am comfortable.  This number is less compared to the whole syllabus, but they are the topics sink in close to me. Warm welcome client should be comfortable to talk to.  There need to be a trust formed at the beginning, which need to carry forward till end.  A friendly smile ease the situation and breaks ice between strangers. Contracting Take time to understand the client's need.  Rephrase the needs and confirm that is what is the topic of discussion is about.  Such understanding becomes a navigating compass for the entire discussion. Energy concentration What is the area of interest of the client?  Which topic makes the person very interesting or which one is really bothering?  Talking around this topic w...

The unspoken words

Posted by Jeya Balaji After going through counseling course, I was looking around to use the skills.  Through my wife's contact, I came to know about a family desperately in need of counseling.  They had reached out to many services but the problem still persist. The man in the family is not speaking for 11 years.  His wife is trying all possible ways to recover him. While hearing about this person, I was thinking what strategy I should apply to a man who is not interactive.  I was thinking on this line and approached their home. It is a small village beyond Thondamuthur.  I ventured into the place with my wife.  It is Saturday, 29th Feb 2020, time about 3pm. A pleasant surprise was, against my expectations, the man was talking.  The chief complain was that he stopped talking to family members.  He rarely speaks to others.  He is a man of less words. I started talking to him and his wife.  Slowly brought a friendly atmosphe...

Habit to Addiction Further to my Blog on Habits, I visited my habits and one of them stood up predominantly, my ‘SMOKING’.  My father used to be a chain smoker (he is 86 now and had left smoking probably in his 50s) and my first puff emanated from his cigarette butt. I must be 8-9 years old when my friend and me decided to taste the thunder!! Well the initial puff was horrible, coughing and spitting! Then the smoke got used to us!! This probably carried on for a year or two and stopped.  The next episode started when in college as a Macho syndrome; this is the place it developed into a habit. It started as a sequence based on timing and slowly developed into habit where the cue was the time of the day.  During my Army training days, though there was a very strict policy of no smoking, I sneaked few cigs once in a while. Those days in Army almost 90% of the officers smoked and it just carried on.  The numbers started increasing, there was no c...
