Brush up of therapy/counseling skills
1. Who is a client?
Client is one who voices out that he/she needs help and ready to work for his/her change.
Understanding who is the client exactly:
Sometimes the client will not have any prob but come to the therapist for just being with them. Therapist needs to inquire the purpose and only if the client has issue to process/ work for some change in them, then fix up appointment agreed by both. Only then a person becomes a client.
If the client is not aware why he or she has come to you. Exploration of that can be a session.
Therapy is because not the therapist wants it but the client needs it.
Client & their issue is to be given the importance and not the therapist's curiosity about the client's life.
2. How do we start off counseling/therapy?
* Therapy/counseling has to happen with the "here and now" happenings.
* To start with, asking " Why have you come to me?" or "What help do you need?"
* Rapport building done along with the lines of problem/issue presented by the client.
Nothing else because it might cut the line of thought of client in regards to the issue or take it somewhere else that the client might lose interest.
The question is directed to the client to as to go deeper into the issue as sometimes the client may deflect or the issue presented and the internal issue of the client might be entirely different. This will provide the therapist/counselor to get more understanding of the client by letting them talk rather than the therapist talking a lot.
* Point to remember : Client comes to therapist when they are not able to get awareness on their own. So therapist needs to set aside the personal belief system/judgement. Remember " Client is important". Therapist's curiosity needs to be set aside. Its imperative to kindle the curiosity of the client in regards to the issue for progress.
* Stroking as a part of process
* Checking for symptoms in therapist's senses when the client speaks with emotional issues
* 3 ways to make the client go deeper into the issue
1. 1st party experience
2. 3rd party knowledge
* Checking for belief system
# S's process- To get up early in the morning
1. 1st party knowledge - Why have she approached the therapist today?
Becoz of tiredness she slept. so what can she do to help her tiredness?
2. 3rd party knowledge - Liking the bed so much. Become the bed and talk about S of why she
likes the bed so much.
3. Goal oriented approach - Whats the goal? To listen to birds and walk in silence.
How can we help make this happen?
Ability oriented approach- What have S come today? - To know how to get up early
She has the ability to get up early. Then why?
Oh she is tired so much that she cant wake up. Isnt it ok to take rest when tired?
Understanding comes from the client what exactly is the issue about and progressing towards the solution.
